Jayden's story

Default profile picture for Jayden, a 16-year-old Bridgewell member
"My mentor helped me practise for my first job interview, and I got the job."

Jayden, 16, member since 2024. "Before I joined Bridgewell I didn't really talk to anyone outside school. A friend told me about the mentoring sessions, so I gave it a go. My mentor, Sam, meets me once a month. We've worked on my CV, practised interview questions and just talked about what I want to do after college.

The workshops helped too - I went to a budgeting one that actually made sense, unlike the one at school. I got my first part-time job earlier this year, and I still see my mentor to talk about how it's going. I'd tell anyone thinking about joining to just turn up to one session and see how it feels."

Getting the most from mentoring

Short tips for your first few sessions: what to bring up, how often to meet and what mentors can't help with.

Come with one thing you want to talk about, even something small. Sessions work best when you set the topic. It's fine to meet online if travelling is difficult - just let your mentor know in advance. Mentors are volunteers, not counsellors or teachers, so for anything serious they'll help you find the right support instead.

How mentoring works

A short guide to getting matched, meeting monthly and choosing your own topics.

Welcome to Bridgewell Foundation. This is a short guide to how mentoring works here.

When you join, we match you with a trained volunteer mentor who you will meet often.

You meet your mentor once a month, in person at the hub or online, to talk through goals and challenges.

You choose what to talk about. Popular topics are college choices, job applications and building confidence.

If this sounds useful, visit the Join Us page to sign up. It only takes a few minutes.

Workshops run once a month at the Bridgewell Hub and last about an hour and a half. Each one covers a practical topic, such as job applications, budgeting or public speaking. You don't need to book in advance, and you can come to as many or as few as you like. Snacks and drinks are provided, and every workshop is run by a volunteer with real experience of the topic.
